This is the amazing story of how Digg.com administrators ignored a report of alleged plagiarism, then proceeded to suspend the account and ban the IP of the complainant who brought the issue to their attention. The administrator of Allsux.com recently posted a link to Digg.com tagging back to an article in the Allsux blog. Within hours, a second story appeared linking to another site which had roughly duplicated the original content and put it under a new headline. This second story eventually got over 5,000 Diggs while the original story got less than 20. Why? My speculation: the second headline was catchier - or was Dugg up by corrupt Diggers. When Allsux contacted Digg concerning the issue, no response was forthcoming. After posting repeatedly in the 'comments' section under the plagiarized post on Digg.com, Digg suspended the Allsux account. When Allsux continued to post updates on the situation and post links to these stories on Digg, the Allsux URL was blocked from Digg's system and the Allsux administrator's IP address was likewise banned from creating new accounts. So, rather than responding to a complaint, they censored the complainant and blocked him from their system. To date, they have not written Allsux a single direct response » original news

Digg.com is getting cocky and banning small web sites just because digg's users submit them to digg and digg's moderators don't like it. Scifidigg.com is the latest victim of Digg's "We are big, you are small and we can do whatever we wanta€? attitude.First some background. After running the website Scifi2u.com for the last year we realised there was a demand for a scifi digg type website - 6 Days ago ScifiDigg.com was born and is powered by open source Pligg and the YouTube API. So what went wrong? The site went live on the 22 March 2007. People submitted stories and video links to digg and other sites del.icio.us, Yahoo, Simply and Reddit. Having a submit button makes submitting very easy and fast but that could be a problem.Let's get to the pointWITHIN 6 DAYS THE SITE HAS BEEN BANNED FROM DIGGDigg's moderators decided that since the link pointed to my site and the posts are mainly videos from YouTube ScifiDigg should be banned from digg and no other links from scifidigg.com can be posted to digg.Digg's responseI contacted digg to find out what happened and why they blocked my site. The response I got from them was that my site violated their terms of use, by copying another site. I explained to them that although the video is streamed by YouTube we give the facility for original coments to be added. The response I got was that they do not allow sites that copy other sites to be submitted to digg. I told them that according to their rules they should also ban Yahoo news, since it does not have an original content but republish articles from PCWorld, Reuters, MACWorld and others. Also falls under this category other major sites like neowin.net, blink.nu and many more that are doing exactly the same infact they should ban YouTube because the video content is often copied from other video websites. But hey, they are big sites and digg can't pick on them without repercussion, like they can pick on small blogs that try to establish themselves. So what have we learned?·	Digg's users don't really determine what gets promoted, but digg's moderators do. ·	Digg have a different set of rules for small site and different rules for big sites, even though both are doing the same. ·	Digg will ban a small site just because one of its user's submitted an article that other digg members liked and promoted, but moderator didn't like the link. ·	Digg will not listen to reason when told that the site did not violate its TOS. » original news

These days it seems like everyone's written an article or blog entry on all things digg, e.g. why you shouldn't game digg, digg etiquette, whether digg is rigged. Jeff and I thought we'd join the bandwagon and offer our profound expertise on how to get banned from Digg:Tell digitalgopher that his mother was a hamster and his father smelt of elderberries, and then fart in his general direction. Have Alzheimer's, or be like Leonard from Memento. "Oh, this digg website looks neat! I'll make a profile. Hey, this story seems cool! I'll digg it." Ten minutes later... "Oh, this digg website looks neat! I'll make a profile. Hey, this story seems cool! I'll digg it..." Undercut other users by submitting the exact same entry as theirs, only differentiating yours by adding "Read this one instead! It's super-cool!" in the title. Submit a story titled "Top 10 Reasons Why Netscape is the Coolest Ever!" Submit an article that has pictures of Kevin Rose spooning Owen Byrne. For each article on digg, post a comment that says, "Lame. Dugg down because it looks so fake." Actually, since it's on digg it should look more like, "laim. dug down bcoz it loks fak." Keep submitting stories like, "How to Smuggle Explosives onto a Plane" and "Best Ways to Take Out a Government Building." This is also a good way to see what an FBI official looks like in person, though you'll probably be handcuffed as well. Or you could keep submitting stories that are nothing more than pictures of you wearing a tutu and covered in butterscotch. Trash Ubuntu and say SuSE is where it's at. Submit a story titled, "Hey, Have You Seen This Cool Star Wars Kid Video?" There you have it. Now you know, and knowing is half the battle. » original news

Dave Naffziger of Judy's Book did some testing and found three of Alexa's top ten sites were website non grata at Digg, with 183 sites banned in total. It's no surprise that SEO-related blogs and websites made Naffziger's list of sites banned by Digg. WebProNews readers have known about the problems faced by Lee Odden and his TopRankBlog, among others. Digg's hatred of SEO has been manifested in numerous SEO bannings, not all of them undeserved, either.Who or what has been banned had been a mystery, until Naffziger brought out the magic Sherlock Holmes magnifying glass and took a look. He posted his results after testing the top 10,000 Alexa sites and top 1,000 Blogshares blogs to see what would happen.Along with several sites categorized as SEO, Naffziger found websites and blogs banned by Digg fell into three other categories:User Generated Content sites without subdomains. One bad actor on these sites can ruin it for everyone. Popular UGC sites like Myspace, Squidoo, 43Things, Geocities are all banned, whereas sites like Typepad, Blogspot, Wordpress do just fine because it is easy to ban one bad actor. If I were Seth Godin, I'd give Squidoo lenses their own subdomains pronto - there is good content on Squidoo that will never see the light of Digg.International Sites, particularly Asian sites (Baidu, Sohu, Sina, Yandex, etc.). I can't speak to the quality of these sites, but four of them are in Alexa's top 20 and others are very popular. Digg and Digg users would certainly benefit from international versions of its site. (Hint, follow the Google model, not the Yahoo model).Scummy sites. There are plenty of sites here that I'm not surprised to find banned. Gossip Sites (perezhilton), Adult-themed sites (pornotube), adware/spyware sites (smileycentral), etc.Baidu, MySpace, and Sina.com.cn all rate in Alexa's top ten. The three are at the top of the Digg banned list Naffziger composed as well. Despite Digg having an Entertainment category, several notable gossip sites have been denied the Digg love: PerezHilton, The Superficial, I Don't Like You In That Way, and Defamer.Maybe Kevin Rose wants to keep his Britney head-shaving news pure? » original news

I just saw a pretty humorous article: Florida Restaurant Holds Benefit for Astronaut Lisa Nowak and I was going to submit it to Digg (in the Offbeat News not the Space section) mainly because I couldn't believe that this restaurant couldn't find a better person or cause to hold a benefit for.So I went to submit it:Then I got the infamous banned message:This was quite surprising because Space.com would definitely be considered a trusted, authority site. They have certainly had a lot of exposure on Digg and many homepage stories with one as recent as two days ago. We covered other sites that have been banned back in December but I would venture to say that Space.com would be at the top of that list in regards to a trusted news source. So what happened to lead to this banning? Could it be that Digg buttons lead to abuse and possible bannings? » original news

A lot of bloggers feel that the key to increasing their traffic is to get on the Digg front page as often as they can. Most of these bloggers do so by scooping news, writing how to guides or even top 10 lists, but most don't realize that you have to be careful or else your URL will get banned from Digg. When submitted stories are consistently reported as spam and users complain via our feedback email about submission spam, we ban the domain. The domain will not be unbanned. The domain would consistently get reported as spam otherwise. Please review our FAQ (digg.com/faq) for more information. digg supportHere are some of the things that the Digg community considers spam:Old news Repeated stories that keep on getting submitted, such as "iPod Spoof Commercials". Stories that provide basic information such as "How To Increase Your Blog Traffic". Although many of these types of stories hit the Digg front page, a lot of diggers hate them and are making noise about them by marking them as spam, or even emailing the Digg staff. Stories submitted by website owners. Before you or your friends start submitting your own stories to Digg, be careful and put the Digg community ahead of yourself. It does not matter if you are writing spam or writing good content, if the Digg community feels that you are spamming, your URL will be banned. » original news

The biggest nightmare for most writers that understand socially driven sites like Digg, Netscape, and Reddit, and can take advantage of social media optimization to drive traffic to their content, is to be locked out from the biggest of these communities, Digg.com. John Chow learned this the hard way when he got banned from Digg. Now, however, savvy content producers are beginning to use methods to bypass this Digg-ban.Websites such as notlong.com, tinyurl.com, and shurl.org, exist for the purpose of shortening long urls to make them easier to remember and share. For example, rather than having the following url:http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?ovi=1&mqmap.x=300&mqmap.y=75&mapdata=%252bKZmeiIh6N%252bIgpXRP3bylMaN0O4z8OOUkZWYe7NRH6ldDN96YFTIUmSH3Q6OzE5XVqcuc5zb%252fY5wy1MZwTnT2pu%252bNMjOjsHjvNlygTRMzqazPStrN%252f1YzA0oWEWLwkHdhVHeG9sG6cMrfXNJKHY6fML4o6Nb0SeQm75ET9jAjKelrmqBCNta%252bsKC9n8jslz%252fo188N4g3BvAJYuzx8J8r%252f1fPFWkPYg%252bT9Su5KoQ9YpNSj%252bmo0h0aEK%252bofj3f6vCPyou can have:http://tinyurl.com/6 However, these sites are additionally being used to mask the original url so that users can bypass the Digg ban-checker and submit articles from banned domains to Digg. » original news

I've been very impressed by Digg.com's rise to prominence this year and so I've been looking into the system some more. Alex Bosworth wrote a great post about the Digg system recently, which I blogged and added my comments about whether Digg would be susceptible to gaming. Well today I came across a curious saga, of an anonymous person who goes by the name of a€˜KoolAidGuy'. KoolAidGuy has been attempting to game digg.com and indeed wrote a post about it entitled Why Digg's non-hierarchical editorial control does not work and how to exploit it. But don't bother clicking on that link, because koolaidguy's blog has since been removed (it has a 404 error currently) and the only way I could view the post above was looking at Google's cache. What surprised me wasn't so much this person's post, but the intense reaction of the digg.com users to koolaidguy's exploits. More on that in a minute, but first here's koolaidguy's mysteriously disappeared post:Why Digg's non-hierarchical editorial control does not work and how to exploit itYou may think that Digg is user controlled but that is not the case. Digg is poorly designed and highly exploitable. I am going to show you how I took control of Digg today and how easy it was. If you are a Digg admin I hope you fix this ASAP.I have successfully promoted many stories onto the front page. I have been doing this for the past few months. The steps are easy and anybody can do it. First off I register many accounts. Today alone I have registered the following accounts. They are seperated by login/password pairs. If you attempt to login using one of these accounts you will get an error message because they have since been banned. With each account I started to kill stories from the front page and in the digg queue by mass reporting them. A story will be removed with about 7 reports. This is easily accomplished using a bookmarklet. And then I proceeded to digg random stories with low digg counts. Again to simplify the process I used a bookmarket. The following is a snapshot of the stories that were mass dugg by me:Pages 1, 2, 3This is a snapshot of the front page. Notice how the stories that I've mass dugg dominates the front page:When Worlds Collide, Nice webdesign showcase Digg sauce, Review of the Web's First News Channel, auto-lock your computer on start-up, REVIEW: ATI's Newest Midrange Card (Radeon X1600 XT), Technology Enabled Leather Jacket, Using Math to Beat the Market, Want to go to the movies? Expect 20 minutes of advertising first., Huge collection of old propaganda. This is a snap shot of the diggall page sorted by most diggs. Notice the next stories to be promoted are those that I have dugged. This is obviously a serious design flaw in Digg and should be fixed immediately. I've come to the realize that this is the method that Albertpacino uses to get his stories onto the front page. In conclusion, Albertpacino is a tool should be banned.posted by KoolAidGuy at 1:30 AM Now I have to admit I'm not familiar with the makeup of the Digg community, so it's not really my place to judge them. But their response to koolaidguy seemed to be ferocious. Perhaps koolaidguy deserved it, I don't knowa€¦ For example check out this post on Digg entitled Why of the Koolaidguy obsession with digg?, on around 16 December:"Today Koolaidguy has done it again, bugging digg left and right, his new tool is an autocomenter to self promote his blog where he gives hints on how he messes with digg."Other Digg fans have blogged against koolaidguy, including this person - who's since removed his post. Again, Google Cache to the rescue:"This is currently a front page story on digg:Everyone who reads Digg knows of a user who calls himself KoolAidGuy. In short, this user started by showing the Digg community an error in the system, however, long after the problem became apparent, he continues to spam Digg, completely destroying it's value. To combat his hypocracy, we need to utilize a wonderful little tool on blogspot called "flagginga€?. Flaggin simply says that a certain blog contains objectional content. If the 100,000 or so Digg users all flag KoolAidGuys blog, they will have to do something about him.Fight the evil one!The evil ones blog. Go there, click flag.Addition:KoolAidGuy has a valid point, but why doesn't he help come up with solutions? All he is doing now is ruining digg for everyone else.Alpacino may use this flaw to front-page his stories, but his stories are often somewhat interesting. He should be stopped, but KoolAidGuy is far worse. That was my comment on the Digg story."I found other Digg stories about fighting "Digg spam": Tired Of The Digg Spam? Block This Ass With Ash's Digg/Greasemonkey ScriptSimple solutions for the recently Digg SpamPlus other solutions such as the Block a digg article script, which is described as:"This script is more for the hard-core diggers who like to watch the queues and not just the front page.Gives you the ability to block an article from your view or block all the articles from an person. Please lemme know what you think and if you have any ideas for it."Then if you do a search for a€˜koolaidguy' in Google, the first result is yet another 404 - an article that (was?) on Digg entitled something like [ Koolaidguy Is The Kind Of Person That We Don't Want On Digg.com ]. I'm not sure what to make of all this, but the one thing that stands out is the very passionate defence of Digg by its users - against koolaidguy. Some might say it was an overreaction. It is certainly the sign of a very strong online community, that to a person they commented angrily against koolaidguy and some of them came up with anti-spam measures to protect Digg. I'm also a bit uneasy about the Digg community's reaction too - and wondering why all these pages on Digg and elsewhere have been pulled? I'm not criticizing the digg community (if the above is anything to go by, then I don't want to feel their wrath!), but I'm curious to know more. Comments welcome. » original news

At least according to this Wired article. The author hired User/Submitter (no link for them) to get the most horribly inane blog on the digg front page (pictures of crowds - how exciting). And indeed, that's where his blog on pictures of crowds ended up very quickly. Now we all know that Digg can be gamed, but what I found most interesting is how the gaming goes hand-in-hand with the natural votes that slowly accumulate once a story gets some traction:Despite their doubts, Diggers kept digging my blog. There's a perverseincentive here: Diggers who vote early on stories that become wildlypopular become more "reputablea€? in the Digg system. If you're trying tomove up the Digg ranks, it's in your best interest to vote on anythingthat looks like it's gaining popularity. And my blog, with its flurryof paid votes, fit the pattern. So it is in the diggers best interested to vote early (maybe before even reading the article) and the gamers can use that to their advantage. It only takes a relatively small amount of bought votes to gain some traction and gather organic votes from there on. The author's blog got buried after a while, probably because the content was just too bad, but two things stand out here: Digg isn't able to control bought votes automatically there are incentives built into digg itself that allow these systems to work » original news

Site claims to pay users for submitting storiesShaun Nichols in Californa, vnunet.com 06 Oct 2006ADVERTISEMENTA pay-for-votes service has been launched that allows publishers to promote their submissions on Digg.com. User/Submitter touts itself as a site "where Digg submitters pay for Digg users to promote their stories, and where Digg users make easy money". Digg is a social book-marking service where users can submit stories and vote for content that they like. Submissions that garner enough interest are promoted to the service's front page, which typically leads to a spike in traffic. The User/Submitter site offers Digg users 10 cents for every 'digg' they issue to listed stories. The publishers of those stories are then charged a base fee of $20 plus $1 per Digg.It is unclear whether the service offers a genuine product or is a hoax, however. In a test by vnunet.com, we were able to create an account and were presented with a list of stories on which we could vote. But we were unable to verify whether those stories had recruited the services of User/Submitter or were just random links pulled from the Digg.com website. User/Submitter did not respond to several requests for comment. » original news

When folks think of Digg, they're often misled into believing that the content seen on the homepage is representative of what a wide base of Internet users think is news-worthy and important. The numbers tell a different story - that of all stories that make it to the front page of Digg, more than 20% come from a select group of 20 users. Digg isn't shy about hiding this fact, their top users page plainly displays the statistics:Digg's Top Users PageThese Top 20 have contributed a total of 5257 stories that have reached the frontpage out of a total of 25,260 stories to ever reach that page - 20.81% to be exact. Many of these top users have, as Digg terms it, a popular ratio of 30% and higher, meaning that almost 1 out of every 3 stories they submit will reach the homepage. Several users (specifically DarkHack & OsterMayer) have popular ratios of over 60%.A logical extension shows that the top 100 Digg Users have contributed 14,249 stories to the homepage, or 56.41%. At Digg, a very select group of users is dominating the popular homepage content. Far from being a mass of opinion, Digg is instead showing, primarily, the content opinions of just a few, select folks. There's certainly nothing wrong with this - it's not a secret or a problem and it isn't hurting Digg's popularity, reputation or importance. But, it is something that many folks who use the site don't realize and many marketers or folks attempting to use it to promote their content should be aware of. Like the college frathouse, it pays to know the right people at Digg.UPDATE: A few good addendums from the comments and some folks in our office that should be included:Cameron Olthius points out that Digg's front-page algo favors submissions from historically successful users and that those users frequently have large bases of friend groups, helping to make their submissions more visible from the start Digg's populist power could be compared well to the del.icio.us/popular list, where a huge number of submitters contribute the content (though it's harder to tell unless you're looking at scraped results over time). It was noted that heavy users of Reddit & others typically contribute in a very similar way, so Digg is by no means an outlier in this fashion. » original news

A little known Digg-fact is that a relatively small group of users submit a large percentage of the stories that end up on the Digg home page. Netscape, which recently relaunched as a Digg-clone, wants to pay those top users to switch over to them. Jason Calacanis, who runs the Netscape property, wrote a post earlier today offering to pay top Digg users $1,000 a month or more to switch to Netscape and submit news there instead.I have a couple of observations on this. Netscape has a massively larger audience than Digg, but has absolutey failed to impact Digg growth at all. AOL placed a big bet on this product, and I imagine they want to see fast results. They aren't getting those results. Jason's post is a sign of desperation more than anything. There is the question of whether or not this will fix this. Digg's Achilles heel is that such a small group of active users drives so much of their success. However, even if those users bail to Netscape, others will certainly take their place at Digg. In my opinion, Netscape may gain some human assets and may get better story submissions, but Digg will probably continue to thrive. At the end of the day, the Netscape product is a soulless reproduction of one of the most interesting cultural experiments occuring on the web right now. It was thrown at millions of mainstream Internet users (previous Netscape portal users) who don't understand Digg and probably don't care (yet). If anything, my bet is that total page views at Netscape have dropped since the changeover, possibly substantially. Buying users from Digg won't change that one bit. It looks like AOL has a mess on its hands. The obvious question is, will Jason will be the fall guy when it comes time to point fingers? The deck chairs are being rearranged on the Titanic Netscape. » original news
